Funeral pricing can be difficult to understand when a family is making decisions under time pressure. A General Price List, often called a GPL, is designed to show itemized prices for the goods and services offered by a funeral provider.
Ask for current written price information
Request the funeral home’s current GPL and review it before selecting services. Depending on the arrangements, other written lists may cover caskets, outer burial containers, or merchandise. Prices and selections can change, so rely on the current documents supplied by the provider rather than an old advertisement or an online estimate.
Separate the major categories
- Professional services: arrangement, coordination, permits, preparation, facilities, staff, vehicles, and related funeral-home services.
- Merchandise: items such as caskets, urns, memorial products, or other selected goods.
- Cash-advance items: amounts paid to third parties, which may include cemetery, crematory, clergy, newspaper, airline, consular, permit, or other outside charges.
Ask what is required and what is optional
The exact requirements depend on the disposition, place of death, timing, cemetery or crematory rules, transportation, and other circumstances. Ask the funeral director to identify each required item and explain alternatives before you authorize the arrangements.
Compare complete arrangements, not one headline price
A low advertised starting price may exclude transportation, permits, preparation, facilities, merchandise, cemetery costs, or other third-party charges. Ask for a written Statement of Funeral Goods and Services Selected showing the complete arrangement as currently planned.
Take time to ask questions
It is appropriate to ask what a charge covers, whether a less expensive alternative exists, when payment is due, and what may change the estimate. Horizon’s care team will explain the choices in plain language and document selections before services proceed.
